On the 8th January 2010, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship announced sweeping changes to Australia’s Skilled Migration Program.
The essential changes have seen the removal of the Migration Occupation in Demand List (MODL) and affect overseas students, currently studying accredited course within Australia. The Government has also indicated that it will introduce a new general Skilled Occupation List, by the middle of 2010 and has called for submissions from relevant stakeholders, in relation to a revamped Points Test.
For students who will complete their courses in 2010 and then wish to apply for Permanent Residency in Australia, a new “Job Ready” scheme will be introduced, which will see changes in the requirements for mandatory skill assessments.
Other major
changes that have been introduced, see an increase in the English language
requirement from a 5.0 IELTS score in each of the 4 test components, to 6.0. The Minister of
Immigration has also set a new priority processing direction which came into
effect on 23 September 2009 and applies to certain skilled migration visas. This means applications that nominate
an occupation on the Critical Skill List (CSL) or include the offer of a job
from an Australian Employer will be given priority.
While the changes may seem daunting and
complicated, there are still viable options for Australian Permanent Residency,
under the Skilled Migration Scheme. However, it is crucial that a well planned and thought out
strategy is implemented, to give your application the best chance of success.
With this in mind and if you are serious about migrating to Australia, we urge you to consult one of the TSS Immigration registered and experienced Australian Migration Agents.
